What restringing costs

  • Labour: usually $15–$30 a racquet in Ontario.
  • String: $5 to $50 or more, depending on type: synthetic gut, multifilament, polyester or natural gut.
  • Typical total for a recreational player: about $25–$60. [source]

How often to restring

A common rule: restring as many times a year as you play each week. Play twice a week, restring about twice a year. Strings lose tension and liveliness even if they never break, and competitive players often restring before every tournament. [source]

Tension in plain terms

Lower tension (about 48–52 lbs) gives more power and is easier on the arm; higher tension (about 58–65 lbs) gives more control. Most recreational players are happy between 52 and 58 lbs. [source]

Do junior racquets need restringing?

From the coaching side, here's what I tell parents:

  • Red and orange ball (19"–23"): these racquets come pre-strung, and the factory string is fine until it breaks. A restring can cost close to what the racquet did, and kids outgrow these sizes within a season or two.
  • Green ball and up (25"–26"): once a child plays two or three times a week, a fresh soft string (synthetic gut or multifilament) at a moderate tension makes a real difference.
  • Skip full polyester for kids. It's stiff and harder on young arms; it's built for strong adult swings.
  • A broken string is a good time to check the size. If your child is about to move up anyway, put the money toward the next racquet. The 30-second quiz tells you the length.

FAQ

How much does it cost to restring a tennis racquet in Vaughan?

Expect about $25–$60 for a recreational restring: usually $15–$30 of labour plus $5–$50 or more of string, depending on the string you choose.

How long does restringing take?

Stringing itself takes well under an hour, but most Vaughan stringers work by appointment, so turnaround depends on their schedule. Ask when you drop the racquet off.

How often should I restring my tennis racquet?

A common rule is as many times a year as you play each week, so twice a week means about twice a year. Strings lose tension even when they don't break.
